MESSAGE TO THE KOREAN ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED PERSONS(KARP)

Greetings and congratulations from AARP on the occasion of the third anniversary of the Korean Association of Retired Persons(KARP). AARP commends your efforts and success in establishing an association for people over 50 in the Republic of Korea.

Your mission to serve the needs of older Koreans is an urgent one and close to our hearts. Like AARP's founder, Ethel Percy andrus, KARP's founder Myong Juch brings a visionary's energy and dedication to the associations. May KARP continue to grow and prosper in the Republic of Korea as AARP has grown and prospered in the United States.

The population in the Republic of Korea is aging faster than that of any other member country of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD). And while you currently have one of the youngest working-age populations among OECD members, by 2050, you will have the second oldest.

KARP clearly recognizes that it is in the best interest of all nations to establish as a major goal and priority, an environment in which older citizens can experience the maximum degree of self-sufficiency, dignity and respect as they age.AARP and KARP will continue to play a vital role in the 21st century. We must be the agents of societal change. We must be the voices of older persons. It is our highest purpose and greatest responsibility. As President of AARP, I plan to work hard to advance AARP's longstanding role as advocate and information source for people 50 and older. Health and economic security for our aging populations are two of AARP's top priorities. We will continue our efforts to advocate for quality and accessibility of health care, improving opportunities for an aging workforce and ensuring income security in retirement.

Working together, people have the power to make it better. The activities of both AARP and the Korean Association of Retired Persons serve to improve the lives of people of all ages, and to build bridges of understanding and cooperation among generations. AARP applauds your ongoing commitment to the welfare of your citizens, and wishes you continued success in your endeavors.

Marie F Smith
